Skip helped shade this one from harsh sunlight by straddling a log and standing with one foot in the water. He is a good friend to do that for me... ;-)
On the last day of our photography field trip in the Green Swamp (Brunswick County, North Carolina), we went to Rice Creek. This location is always reliable for a robust orchid species which has a wonderful, sweet-earthy scent. I could even smell these from five feet away...
This year, they were beautiful -- large flowers in perfect bloom. Even though I have dozens (maybe hundreds) of images of this species, I never tire of seeing and photographing them every autumn...

This closeup shows the pubescent (hairy/fuzzy) flowers. The lip sports a thickened, creamy yellow central section.

The reflections in the background are composed of the sky and also leaves floating in the water behind the plants. The orchids were growing along the edge of the creek within a few feet of the bridge over Rice Creek.

I have never seen such ornate flowers in this species. The lip and petals/sepals are recurved in a very pleasing way.

What a way to end the orchid season down in the Southeast. One of the main reasons for my going to the Green Swamp (on the Carolina coastal plain) was to photograph one of the scarcest ladies'-tresses orchids in the Green Swamp. Although we didn't find a large number of this species on the trip, what we did find was in perfect bloom.
Along for the ride were David McAdoo , Skip Pudney , Ben Rostron , Jared Barnes , and me. Ben came all the way from Alberta, Canada, but this was not his first trip to the Green Swamp. He visited earlier in the year to photograph the wonderful fringed orchids found in the area.
A great time was had by all, and we can hardly wait until the spring orchid season so we can all get together again...

We found only a few of this particular orchid species, but this one was definitely the best. It was so nice that I took shots from the front, side, and back...
This is the remainder of my flower images from the past weekend spent in Brunswick County, North Carolina. This is the location for the Green Swamp Preserve -- a local treasure managed by The Nature Conservancy. TNC performs prescribed burns and otherwise insures that this wonderful area is kept in a state that allows orchids and other wildflowers to thrive.
