The Old Run-In

10 Mar 2019 1 84
This was the barn for the horses our family had over the years. It's not a good site for the barn as it floods in the spring, and it's not in the best shape anymore. My plan is to have this torn down at some point, but for now it's housing all my tools and garden stuff. In the meantime, the flanking cherry trees need to come down! There is a small chestnut tree on the far side that will remain.

I removed the woven wire fence where the new shed is and put another gate in.

So the curtains didn't last long. Unfortunately bored mules like to chew things they shouldn't! Here's my next attempt at creating a fly-free zone. These are mesh screens with magnetic closures. We'll see how long these last...

In another effort to reduce their exposure to flies, I've put some cheap curtains across the entrance to the mules' run in shed. It took them a few hours to wind up the courage to walk through them, but once they figured out the run in was bug free, they had no problem dealing with flapping fabric. I secured some heavy fishing weights on the bottom to keep them from blowing up too far in the wind.

Wooo hoooo! all that's needed is the stall mats, lights and water!

I had the contractors remove the existing glass window on the back of the shed and replace it with a barred open window. I asked if they could fashion a shutter of sorts to close the bad weather out. Here's their resulting solution - a shutter made from the old door from the front of the shed, clever clever!

Stall mats to make it easy to clean. Lucky for me the boys don't usually use their run in as a toilet.

This little shed off the back of the barn is going to be converted into a run-in shed for my mules.

graded!

The couple I hired to do the Two Mule Palace rented a machine to cut down the hump in front of the shed, using that dirt as fill for the inside of the shed. (It took a lot more than just that dirt - there's quite a bit of road pack in there, too!) They also sloped the ground on a downward angle away from the shed to encourage surface water to run out of the pen. No mud pits here!

gutted!

Floor ripped out, here's what was underneath. Found part of a tractor, an old shoe, a beer bottle and a bone of some sort. Treasures! Luckily the sills of the shed were in really good shape; only one corner was slightly rotten and that was replaced.
