So the curtains didn't last long. Unfortunately bored mules like to chew things they shouldn't! Here's my next attempt at creating a fly-free zone. These are mesh screens with magnetic closures. We'll see how long these last...

In another effort to reduce their exposure to flies, I've put some cheap curtains across the entrance to the mules' run in shed. It took them a few hours to wind up the courage to walk through them, but once they figured out the run in was bug free, they had no problem dealing with flapping fabric. I secured some heavy fishing weights on the bottom to keep them from blowing up too far in the wind.

Frigid temperatures - into the deep freeze we go. How do you keep your outside animals happy and warm? I don't blanket because my mules grow thick, wooly coats and blanketing would just hinder the natural efficiency of those coats. They have the run in shelter to get out of the wind, there's a heater in the stock tank to keep the water from freezing, and enough hay to feed a herd of mules. As long as they're eating, they're keeping themselves warm.
