The monumental staircase was built from 1777, when Bishop Manuel de Vasconcelos Pereira hired the bricklayer Manuel Faustino Loureiro (who had previously worked at the church, together with Francisco Rente) for its execution, based on drawings sent from Lisbon . Composed of several sections and levels, with varied fountains and sculptures, among which we highlight the Pátio dos Reis (with the fountain of Remedies by Nicolau Nasoni), the staircase was only finished much later, already in the 20th century .
