As the old song goes: Rio Mira vai cheio e o barco não anda . . . Still goes on after so many years full of tranquility and peace.

In 1486, D. João II founded a new village, in the place called Milfontes, with the purpose of protecting and developing commercial transactions. Because it is located on the coast, this region was often plagued by pirates, who plundered and assaulted the population and boats. In the 16th to 18th centuries, the Maghreb pirates afflicted the Portuguese coast in a dramatic way. To face this climate of fear and instability, at the end of the 16th century, the fort of São Clemente was ordered to be built.
