The Jerónimos Monastery has been classified as a National Monument since 1907 and, in 1983, it was classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, together with the Torre de Belém. On July 7, 2007 it was elected as one of the seven wonders of Portugal. Closely linked to the Portuguese Royal House and the epic Discoveries, the Jerónimos Monastery was, from a very early age, "internalized as one of the symbols of the nation"

Jerónimos III On July 3, 1780, during the reign of D. Maria I, in the context of social problems arising from the earthquake of 1755 that devastated the city of Lisbon, Casa Pia de Lisboa was founded on the initiative of Diogo Inácio de Pina Manique. installed in the Castle of S. Jorge receives children, orphans and abandoned, as well as beggars and prostitutes, in different sectors. Thirteen years after its foundation, in 1793, Casa Pia de Lisboa, from the humble gathering of orphaned and abandoned children, had been transformed into a large Institution of Social Solidarity, a modern school with more than a thousand students. As a result of the French invasions and the occupation of Lisbon by the Napoleonic armies, Junot installed his troops in the Castle. The children of Casa Pia were displaced and distributed to nursing homes, parishes and convents. Others simply stayed on the street.

The refectory was built between 1517 and 1518 by master Leonardo Vaz and his officers. With its polynervated and depressed vault, it clearly exemplifies the taste of the Manueline period. Beneath thick stone cords, the walls are covered with ashlar of tiles from 1780-1785.

In the Monastery, which took the entire 16th century to be built, is the most beautiful refectory in Portugal. Since its construction, in 1517/1518, by the master Leonardo Vaz and his officers, and until 1834, it was the exclusive place for meals for the monks of the Order of São Jerónimo. Later, I would join the children of Casa Pia in Lisbon here, also at mealtime..
