Oxford Martyrs' cell door

24 Sep 2016 2 497
This is the door through which Archbishop Thomas Cranmer and Bishops Hugh Latimer and Nicholas Ridley, known as the Oxford Martyrs, were led to their deaths. It was the entrance to their cell, originally located in the "Bocardo" Prison, which was constructed over the North Gate of the city and could be entered through this tower. Latimer and Ridley were burned at the stake in 1555, and Cranmer followed in 1556. Their crime was their refusal to embrace the Roman Catholic faith of the then Queen of England, Mary Tudor. The site of their execution is marked by a cross in the middle of Broad Street.
