I took several different images of the crescent moon last night, May 11th, 2024, at different focal lengths. Here they are side by side to compare the difference between the sizes.

Conjunction August 1978

I happened to catch this conjunction of the moon and Venus when I was using my high school's yearbook camera - a Konica Autoreflex TC. I was the yearbook photographer that year, my senior year. This shot, from last night (August 8th, 2019), was a test for a challenge group I belong to. You can also see two of Jupiter's moons.

Conjunction Junction

10 Aug 2019 11 20 492
There was a conjunction of the Moon and the planet Jupiter tonight and this shot is from about an hour ago, just after the sky had gotten good and dark. Jupiter is just below and slightly to the right of the Moon. You can also see three of Jupiter's moons as well. For the Saturday Self-Challenge group, whose theme this week was "Deep Depth Of Field." The Moon is 238,855 miles away from Earth, while Jupiter is approximately 600 million miles away from Earth. Since both the Moon and Jupiter are in sharp focus, there is 600 million miles worth of depth of field. I doubt anyone else in the challenge this week has more depth of field than that! I thought of this idea almost immediately this past Sunday, when I heard what the challenge subject was going to be; but I had to wait until tonight, just before the time to post my entry, before I could even take my picture. It stormed and was cloudy until about 7 p.m., so I'm sure glad the skies cleared up or I wouldn't have had an entry! Oh, yeah: Conjunction Junction .

Moon-Saturn Conjunction

16 Jul 2019 1 5 216
This is the conjunction of the moon and Saturn I photographed a little over an hour ago. Taken on July 16th, 2019 with a Sony Alpha SLT-a77v with a Minolta AF Zoom 70-210mm f/4.5 zoom lens. It was raining and cloudy the day before and the day after I took this image, but there was a small break in the cloud cover for about 15 minutes that allowed me to get this shot.

Saturn

16 Jul 2019 1 1 204
Saturn happens to be very close to the Earth right now, so I wanted to get a shot of it if I could. I was most interested in shooting it on the night of July 15th/16th, as it was going to be in conjunction with the moon. But, it's been raining here for the last two days when I wanted to take the picture. Finally, at about 4.20 a.m. this morning, there was a small break in the clouds for about 15 minutes and I managed to get this shot. It's not very clear, but I think it's pretty impressive considering I used a DSLR with a zoom lens of only 210mm! Mounted on a tripod and using the self-timer so as to minimize potential blur. Camera: Sony Alpha SLT-a77v DSLR Lens: Minolta AF Zoom 70-210mm F/4.5 Shooting Program: Manual ISO: 400 Aperture: f/9 Shutter Speed: 1/40 Date: July 16th, 2019, 4.20 a.m. Place: Norris City, Illinois, U.S.A.

That's No Moon! Oh, Wait....

Bad Moons Rising

A double exposure, well 6 actually, of the moon, taken around 1977 with a Kodak Brownie Hawkeye Flash 620 camera. It looks like it got much more cloudier after the first exposure at the bottom. 620 Moon 03df

Minolta XG-1 Moon

This was the closest shot of the moon I had taken up to this point in time back in 2007. It was my first zoom lens and I was real happy to be able to expand my reach.
