Gyro

01 Jan 2025 67
This is what I made for dinner tonight - Greek gyros. I made them all homemade, with the traditional lamb meat, tzatziki sauce made with cucumbers, and of course big chunks of tomato - all on fresh pita bread I baked this afternoon. (I cooked the lamb meat and made the tzatziki sauce yesterday so it would be ready for today.) Taken on December 31st, 2024, with my Sony Alpha SLT-a77V DSLR.

I had a good crop of tomatoes this year! Taken on August 11th, 2015 with my Samsung L100 point and shoot digital camera.

Tomato Plants

14 Nov 2024 46
These are a couple tomato plants I’ve been growing in my library since last July 2022. They're starting to have a few tomatoes ripen and in fact, I picked the first three just last week. It’s been a fun experiment and now there are dozens of blooms and at least a dozen or so tomatoes getting bigger and bigger and ready to ripen. An experiment I can really sink my teeth in! Five More Tomatoes

I picked five more tomatoes today, June 2nd, 2023, off the experimental tomato plants I'm growing in my library. They're doing fine!

First Tomatoes

Today, Monday, May 8th, 2023, there were three tomatoes I've been growing in my library that were ripe enough to pick, and so I did. I sliced up one for lunch and it was the best tasting, juiciest tomato I've had in a long while. Much better than the ones I can get at the local stores. I've had so much fun taking care of these tomato plants and watching them grow!

Tomato Starts

I posted a picture the other day of the tomato plants I'm growing indoors and how they're starting to bloom. Here's what they looked like when they were tiny starts, and before I had transplanted them. Taken on July 19th, 2022 with my Sony Alpha SLT-a77V DSLR.

Tomato Blooms

I started growing some tomato plants from seeds last year around July (2022.) Most of them I transplanted outdoors on August 29th, but I planted them too late and cold weather set in before they could grow big enough. But I kept two plants to experiment with and attempt at growing them indoors. This picture is one of those plants and they're starting to put on blooms. What you see is actually two blooms that have opened. (One is covered up by the main one in front.) They are the biggest blooms and the first to open up. But there are lots more coming in all over each plant. They seem to be doing well. They are by a window in my library where they can get plenty of sun, but no cold temperatures. I just think it's so fascinating to be able to watch them grow every day and take care of them. I'm not sure what variety they are because the seeds came from a tomato I bought at the local grocery store downtown. But, I've had great success doing that with their tomatoes before, so I'm confident it will work again.

The First Tomato

25 Jun 2022 1 132
I was so surprised to see my tomato plants are finally starting to put on fruit from all the blossoms. This must have been the first tomato, because it's the biggest; I also saw a couple others. I only planted them a month ago and tomorrow it will have been exactly a month. Taken on June 24th, 2022 with my Sony Alpha SLT-a77V DSLR. This particular plant is one of the three Cherokee Purples I planted. The tomato looks big, but it's actually only about the size of a pea.

First Blooms

I just planted my tomato plants on May 25th, that was only 15 days ago, and already, they're starting to bloom! I saw blooms on two of my four plants so far. I guess the place I picked to plant them allows them plenty of sunlight, I'm feeding them occasionally with tomato plant food, and the spot where I placed them had some real black and rich soil. I counted at least six blooms on this one spot. Taken on June 8th, 2022.

I Say Tomato, You Say.... Well, You Get The Idea

I bought some tomato plants today and planted them in my yard. I just love fresh tomatoes. One plant was a "Better Boy" variety, a hybrid; while the other three were a "Cherokee Purple" - an heirloom variety. Taken on May 25th, 2022, with my Sony Alpha SLT-a77V DSLR.

Nelson Flounder Filets

01 Feb 2022 1 117
This is the dish I made for dinner tonight, a recipe called "Nelson Flounder Filets." I took the recipe out of the Graham Kerr Cookbook, pictured below. The recipe was number 25 in that volume. The recipe turned out real flavorful, although I did make one slight change. Instead of the clarified butter it called for, I used some Irish butter instead.

Second Tomato

05 Sep 2016 1 301
This is only my second tomato this year, and it's a dwarf one. For some reason, this year's growing conditions are all mixed up and I'm not getting any big tomatoes like usual. Taken just a few moments ago in my yard.

KM Tomato

17 Aug 2016 236
I dug my dusty old Konica Minolta Maxxum 5D DSLR out and took this shot of my best tomato so far moments ago. It's not saying much for the terrible growing conditions I've had here. The year is taking a bad turn, I hate to admit. My washer went out today and there was/is a snake in my house.

Canned Tomatoes

10 Sep 2014 1 418
I did my first-ever canning yesterday, Monday actually. I had a bunch of tomatoes and did them up in 7 pint jars. There was enough juice left over to do 1 pint of tomato juice, so when the 7 pints were finished in the canner, I cooked the juice for 85 minutes as well. My parents canned stuff all the time and although I helped prepare the foods for canning, I never really paid attention to the cooking part. A quick browse on the internet refreshed everything in my mind that I needed to know. I remembered my parents doing all the things it took to can tomatos and it was a snap.

Tomato No. 3

26 Aug 2014 1 1 291
This is only the third tomato I've had turn ripe so far. My tomato plants just aren't doing very good for some reason. Photographed this morning on my picnic table top. The dew was still on the tomato when I took this shot.
