Rotorua ist eine Stadt mit knapp über 50.000 Einwohnern auf der neuseeländischen Nordinsel. Rotorua gehört zum Distrikt Rotorua Lakes und zu der Region Bay of Plenty . Die Stadt liegt am südlichen Ende des Lake Rotorua , dem zweitgrößten See der neuseeländischen Nordinsel.
Rotorua ist insbesondere für die starken geothermischen Aktivitäten in der Stadt und der Umgebung bekannt. Überall sieht man Dampf aus dem Boden kommen und in der ganzen Stadt liegt ständig ein Schwefelgeruch in der Luft. In der Umgebung von Rotorua kann man zudem mehrere Geothermalparks besichtigen.
Fast 40% der Bevölkerung von Rotorua sind Maori. Dies ist der zweithöchste Anteil bei den neuseeländischen Städten. Nicht von ungefähr gibt es daher in Rotorua und Umgebung verschiedene Maori-Dörfer, in denen unter anderem diverse Folkloreveranstaltungen für Touristen durchgeführt werden, bei denen z.B. der Maori-Kriegstanz Haka dargeboten wird.
Ein solches Maori-Dorf ist Whakarewarewa am südlichen Rand von Rotorua. Hier leben auch heute noch Maori. Neben Einblicken in die Maori-Kultur hat Whakarewarewa auch diverse geothermische Attraktionen zu bieten.
Auf diesem Foto sind einige Gräber von Whakarewarewa zu sehen, die aufgrund der geothermischen Aktivitäten allesamt oberirdisch angelegt sind.
