The quarry was started in 1745 and the introduction of steam pumps in 1842 meant they could quarry to a depth of 250 feet below sea level with only a narrow wall of rock holding back the sea, This wall was breached during a storm in 1881 and brought end to slate quarrying at Ellenabeich. They are neither fields or Eco park at the moment even the pigeons look dejected, one of the many times the area has flooded this year, our local council intends to spend a £140.000 installing paths and benches in the area, hope it's all waterproof and fixed down. An area known as The Meads, A 42 acre flood plain that divides the western area of town, In summer it's a haven for wildlife, dog walkers, children and courting couples it is now protected as an Eco park.
