West Quay, Bridgwater, The Fountain Inn, (note the date at the top), next building for many years had a dance venue on the first floor, the sign built into the brickwork lists it as the "Fisherman's Wharf" but known locally as "Oddfellows Hall" further down the green building was another pub "Kings Head" Merchant ships tied up on both sides of the river and steps for access can be seen built into the wall! A short history for anyone interested, bridgwater-tc.gov.uk/history/river-shipping/bridgwater-shipping A large view is best for details.

In Bridgwater the River Parrett has a tidal range from less than 1m to almost 7m, in this image looking from West Quay across to East Quay which also housed dry docks for shipbuilding, both sides of the river used to unload ships from far flung parts of the world some for transhipment into barges for travel to towns up river, Please see PIP (An old postcard taken fron the other side of the bridge) The river was so busy it is said you could cross the river by walking on the moored ships, silting has however narrowed the river since those days, HFF and a good weekend, Large may be better.

A hand powered crane used to load and unload ships berthed on the tidal quays, The River Parrett was navigable, with care, by 400-to-500-tonne (390-to-490-long-ton) vessels. High tides occur every 12 hours therefore the link for Sight and Sound is the slightly risky "Twice Daily" by Somerset's own Adge Cutler and the Wurzels from 1966, www.youtube.com/watch?v=jYaBsLcnoz0 ,
