In my suburb there were two public telephones here back in 2004. There has been only one for some years now. These days one can call any Australian number for free from a public phone. The remaining phone at this location can be called on +61 7 4635 5219 ;-) Another change since this photo is that the house across the road has been demolished and replaced with a preschool. June 2004.

A public telephone at a suburban shopping centre in Toowoomba. The empty shop upper left was previously the Post Office (it's now an agency in the newsagent 80m behind the photographer www.ipernity.com/doc/grahamh/31344681 ). Here there is the strange sight these days of having two public telephones in the one small shopping strip. See the note and www.ipernity.com/doc/grahamh/31344807 .

A public telephone cabinet at a suburban shopping centre in Toowoomba. The location is close to where the post office was. Postal services are now provided from an agency in the newsagent shop. The red 'Post' advertisement can be seen in the background. The opposite view www.ipernity.com/doc/grahamh/31344639/in/group/873405 The advertisement on the phone box is for the National Broadband Network, originally planned as a fibre-based IP network to replace the switched telephone network. The small-minded visionless govt voted in in 2013 has gutted this plan choosing to continue using copper cable to deliver the service to existing premises. Toowoomba is in the fortunate position of being part of the initial rollout so most people in town have got / will get fibre and some rural areas around the city are served by a dedicated wireless service.
