A typical Danish Christmas Eve in my childhood home. Father has lit the candles, the doors have been opened and the family let in for the traditional dancing and singing around the Christmas tree. My mother worked alongside my father on their market gardening farm. Despite her small stature she too had been working since childhood, and now with their own farm she had even more reason for being a hard-working young woman. My mother, Lily, in the middle with her brother Max and sister Maren. Probably the annual Christmas photo, taken by a photographer in Dronninglund, Denmark, 1919. Their mother had succumbed to the Spanish Flu the previous winter leaving my grandfather with three little children. No doubt he wanted the picture to show the rest of the family that he could take good care of the children. :)
