Cut-paper collage postcards, one with a dab of acrylic paint.
I've been doing something called Month of Letters, where you put at least one letter or postcard in the mail every day in the month of February. Mostly I've been making custom stationery & envelopes and writing letters, but I've made a few altered postcards, too.
elephants for colleen

Another "personalized" postcard, this time based on Colleen's affection for elephants and the color green. The background map of Southern India is a Fodor guide map of 1972, colorized green. (Note in lower right, beneath the stone elephants, that the island nation next to India is Ceylon, not yet Sri Lanka.) Sources for the elephants are: big leg--painting by Walton Ford reproduced in Taschen catalog; central large one--Cavallini postcard; two in upper right & one in lower left-- Pictorial Webster's ; stone carvings in lower right--uncredited photo.
I set up a little visual connection between the map and the stone elephants: the elephants are from the temple at Mahabalipuram, and right under the large elephant's posterior belly, "Mahabalipuram" is written, next to its location on the coast. (I've been there--it's fantastic!)
the natural and the manmade

This was for the swapbot "Sender's Choice," so I took the opportunity to experiment--my first time trying the napkin overlay technique. Ferns & dragonfly are the napkin. Background is a U.S. land use map. Antelope (Cavallini postcard) is an African species, the bushbuck. Skyline is of Los Angeles. Woman's face is a detail from "Underground Actress, Tokyo, 1967" by Daido Moriyama.
cummings for cristen

The swap challenge was to make a "personalized" postcard--one based on the person's profile. Cristen likes the poet e. e. cummings and the color purple, so I made her an oversized postcard w/ an e. e. cummings quote, from "as freedom is a breakfastfood," framed in different shades of purple. I made the paper for the frame by taking cream-colored cardstock, wetting it, balling it up, and abusing it, then laying it out in strips to dry, then coloring it w/ Prismacolor markers. The quotation was written with a Zig calligraphy marker.
the darkest depths of the sea

|
The swapbot challenge was to depict somewhere we'd go on vacation for 2 weeks--no expenses spared. I chose the bottom of the sea--or at least more than 10,000 feet down. On the front of the card I made a collage of some of the fascinating creatures I'd hope to see: a glass squid (middle) then clockwise, another view of a glass squid, a medusa (photo by Kevin Raskoff), a viperfish, and a lizard fish. On the back of the card are more creatures--a sea cucumber & a hatchet fish (in the stamps), and a cnidarian below. If you can read my writing, it explains some of the details of what they call "high-end science-focused tourism."

'Had an unexpected burst of energy last night: at the end of several hours of mad productivity, this is what I'm taking to the post office. It includes 2 handmade postcards, a printout of a story I wrote, and packages containing 3 long handwritten letters, a book, a wrapped gift, fancy paper napkins for collage, Cavallini postcards & stickers, & other fun stuff--all for folks I've met in swap-bot this year. =tired grin=
I wish this would happen more often!
