Hanging sculpture at the Victoria and Albert Museum
"'Breathless' is a work commissioned specially from the British artist Cornelia Parker for display in the new British Galleries. It was specifically designed to fill the oculus or open space newly created between the two floors of the Galleries in a corner. It is made of 54 defunct brass band instruments which have been squashed flat and hung from wires. They are designed to be seen from both above and below, with polished upper surfaces and tarnished undersides. the work is an attempt by the artist to explore such ideas of duality as silence/noise, upper class/lower class, and death/resurrection."

"Object Type
This monumental clock is a large version of a bracket clock. It was made in about 1865 and looks like a building, with columns supporting a decorated roof. Both the sturdy construction and the architectural form are examples of the Gothic Revival style. The front is enamelled with patterns inspired by Celtic designs.
People
Bruce Talbert (1838-1881) was a very successful commercial designer who designed metalwork, furniture, textiles, carpets, wallpapers and stained glass. His influential book, 'Gothic Forms Applied to Furniture, Metal Work and Decoration for Domestic Purposes', published in 1868, illustrated a range of designs in the Gothic Revival style. He worked on both architectural schemes and on furniture for Skidmores of Coventry, prominent manufacturers of architectural metalwork, who made this clock in about 1865.
Time
The Gothic Revival style was very popular in the 1860s and 1870s in Britain. It is characterised by the use of architectural forms and details, often taken from ecclesiastical sources, for domestic objects. This clock, which looks like a building, shows how commercial designers and manufacturers used the Gothic Revival style."

"The cast collection is a dramatic expression of Victorian ambition, and the strongest embodiment of the Museum's founding mission as a school of art education for both practitioners and the public. At a time when travel was difficult, the Courts brought copies of art and architecture from around the globe together under one roof, offering an encyclopaedia of international decorative styles. Collecting reproductions reached the height of popularity in the mid to late 19th century, and today new methods of digital replication encourage ongoing explorations into copying in the 21st century. Am I the only person concerned by a naked man standing so close to an eagle's beak? I've been pecked on the fingers by birds with lesser beaks and it hurts. And yes, I know that it is a play on words.
