Hubbard Glacier, Alaska Ice from a glacier appears blue because there are fewer air bubbles in it due to the compression. The air bubbles scatter light, making it appear as white. Where there are fewer bubbles to scatter the light, the red light is absorbed and the ice appears to be blue.
