Although some of the people offering camel rides are perfectly legitimate, other offer rides for only $10. They take you far into the desert and then tell you to get off or pay an exorbitant rate to ride back to the pyramid complex. Fortunately, we were warned about them in advance and were able to avoid the scam. IMG 3025

Near Ayers Rock, Australia. Thousands of dromedary camels were imported into Australia during the 19th Century. The advent of modern transportation methods eliminated their usefulness and many were released into the wild. There are now over a million feral camels in Australia and they are being culled because of their effect on the environment and their appetite for native plants. AIMG_6985
