Ajlun Castle - Ajlun, Jordan The Ajlun or Ajloun Castle was Saladin's fortress and base when he defeated the Crusaders in the 12th century. It was constructed in 1184 as a defense of the land held by the Arabs from the Crusaders. Over the years, it was enlarged and another tower was added. Under the rule of the Mamelukes, Ajloun was one of a line of castles and fortresses which, through the use of fire beacons and pigeons, could transmit messages from Cairo to Damascus within twelve hours. It was damaged by strong earthquakes in the 18th and the 20th centuries and is still undergoing restoration.. AIMG 3703
