Galleria Doria Pamphilj - Rome "Palazzo Doria Pamphilj dates to the mid-15th century, but its current look was largely the work of the current owners, the Doria Pamphilj family, who acquired it in the 18th century. The Pamphilj’s golden age, during which the family collection was started, came during the papacy of one of their own, Innocent X (r 1644–55). The opulent picture galleries, decorated with frescoed ceilings and gilded mirrors, are hung with floor-to-ceiling paintings, all ordered chronologically." www.lonelyplanet.com/italy/rome/sights/museums-galleries/galleria-doria-pamphilj AIMG 8950

Portrait of Pope Innocent X (Pamphilj)

Galleria Doria Pamphilj - Rome Diego Rodriguez de Silva y Velázquez "This is the most important work in the collection, and is a masterpiece of 17th century portraiture. It portrays Giovanni Battista Pamphilj, Pope from 1644 to 1655, without attempting to hide his ugliness, “that satirical saturnine, coarse and hideous aspect”, which made his contemporaries and above all his enemies suspect that he had a “contumacious spirit”. Velázquez probably painted this between the end of 1649 and January of 1650. It was painted during a moment of great change in international politics: after the peace of Westphalia (1648) the papacy moved its alliances once more towards Habsburg Spain, dropping the pro-French line. An old English guidebook gives it as Reynold’s authoritative opinion that this is 'the finest picture in Rome.'" www.doriapamphilj.it/roma/en/i-capolavori-doria-pamphilj/diego-rodriguez-de-silva-y-velazquez AIMG 8951

Across the Lagoon

"San Giorgio Maggiore is a 16th century Benedictine church on the island of the same name in Venice, northern Italy, designed by Andrea Palladio and built between 1566 and 1610. The church is a basilica in the classical renaissance style and its brilliant white marble gleams above the blue water of the lagoon opposite the Piazzetta and forms the focal point of the view from every part of the Riva degli Schiavoni." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Church_of_San_Giorgio_Maggiore AIMG_4576
