Achilleion Palace in Corfu, Greece, was built in 1890 by Austrian Empress, Elizabeth of Bavaria. After her assasination, German Kaiser Wilhelm II purchased Achilleion Palace and used it as his summer residence. It was used as a military hospital for French and Serbian troops during World War I and as military headquarter for axis powers during World War II. It is now managed by the Hellenic Tourist Organisation and is open to the public. AIMG_4004

Entrance to the Paleokastritsa Monastery

The Paleokastritsa Monastery in Corfu, Greece is dedicated to Panagia (Virgin Mary) of Paleokastritsa. It is a Byzantine Monastery that dates from 1228, however most of the surving structures date from the 18th Century. It was mobbed with tourists when we went and the highlight, sadly, was watching the large buses attempt to manouver in the tiny parking lot. AIMG_4096

The fortress

13 May 2012 278
The statute of Count Schulenburg, the Austrian mercenary who was the hero of the siege of 1716 overlooks the old fortress in Corfu, Greece. The Turks' attempt to take Corfu failed. Corfu's "history is laden with battles and conquests. The legacy of these struggles is visible in the form of castles punctuating strategic locations across the island. Two of these castles enclose its capital, which is the only city in Greece to be surrounded in such a way. As a result, Corfu's capital has been officially declared a Kastropolis ("castle city") by the Greek government. Corfu was long controlled by Venice, which repulsed several Turkish sieges, before falling under British rule following the Napoleonic Wars. Corfu was eventually ceded by the British Empire along with the remaining islands of the United States of the Ionian Islands, and unification with modern Greece was concluded in 1864 under the Treaty of London." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corfu AIMG_4196

Leaving Corfu, Greece. This photograph was handheld and taken from a moving ship. I did not hold out much hope for this shot, but liked the monotone aspect of it. AIMG_4223
