The Cathedral of St. Domnius in Split, Croatia was built over a 3rd Century Imperial Roman mausoleum. The church is dedicated to the Virgin Mary while the bell tower, built around 1100, is dedicated to Saint Duje, 3rd century Bishop of Salona, capital of the province of Dalmatia, who was martyred by emperor Diocletian. As I was returning to Split, Croatia from the town of Trogir by bus, I saw this odd white elephant perched on the green building. I have no Idea why it was there, but it certainly is unusual. AIMG_4307

Diocletian's Palace in Split, Croatia was built by Roman emperor Diocletian at the beginning of the 4th Century as a retirement home. The Romans eventually abandonned the palace and in the 7th century, local residents occupied it to escape from the barbarians. It has remained occupied since then. The enormous basement filled with trash until it was excavated in the middle of the 20th Century to reveal amazingly thick walls and vaulted ceilings. AIMG_4317
