The Saturday Self Challenge: For this week's challenge, the topic is "One". In other words, I only want one item or subject in your composition. It can be of anything, b&w or color, post processing allowed. How can you make a composition interesting when using only one subject?

St. George Church, Madaba, Jordan
"The Madaba Mosaic Map is a map of the region dating from the 6th century and preserved in the floor of the Greek Orthodox Basilica of Saint George, sometimes called the "Church of the Map". With two million pieces of colored stone, the map depicts hills and valleys, villages and towns in Palestine and the Nile Delta. The mosaic contains the earliest extant representation of Byzantine Jerusalem, labeled the "Holy City." The map provides important details about its 6th-century landmarks, with the cardo, or central colonnaded street, and the church of the Holy Sepulchre clearly visible. This map is one key in developing scholarly knowledge about the physical layout of Jerusalem after its destruction and rebuilding in 70 AD."

The Paleokastritsa Monastery in Corfu, Greece is dedicated to Panagia (Virgin Mary) of Paleokastritsa. It is a Byzantine Monastery that dates from 1228, however most of the surving structures date from the 18th Century. It was mobbed with tourists when we went and the highlight, sadly, was watching the large buses attempt to manouver in the tiny parking lot.

Delos, Greece "has been inhabited since the 3rd millennium BC. . . . By the time of the Odyssey the island was already famous as the birthplace of the twin gods Apollo and Artemis. . . . Indeed between 900 BC and AD 100, sacred Delos was a major cult centre, where Dionysus is also in evidence as well as the Titaness Leto, mother of the above mentioned twin deities. Eventually acquiring Panhellenic religious significance, Delos was initially a religious pilgrimage for the Ionians.
A number of "purifications" were executed by the city-state of Athens in an attempt to render the island fit for the proper worship of the gods. The first took place in the 6th century BC, directed by the tyrant Pisistratus who ordered that all graves within sight of the temple be dug up and the bodies moved to another nearby island. In the 5th century . . . under instruction from the Delphic Oracle, the entire island was purged of all dead bodies. It was then ordered that no one should be allowed to either die or give birth on the island due to its sacred importance and to preserve its neutrality in commerce. . . ."
