Castel Sant' Angelo

Castel Sant' Angelo in Rome was originally commissioned by Roman Emperor Hadrian as a mausoleum for himself and his family. It was later used by the popes as a fortress, prison and castle, and is now a museum. The castle's present name is based upon the legend that Archangel Michael appeared above it and sheathed his sword as a sign that the plague of 590 was over.
