Every April, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, Massachusetts hosts Art in Bloom, a festival of flowers arranged by New England garden clubs and professional designers. The flower art is inspired by the many masterpieces found throughout the Museum.

Pink flowering dogwood trees grow to about 30 feet and bloom in the spring. The flowers form the rather inconspicuous and ordinary center of the bloom. The large pink bracts (specialized leaves) give the tree its distinct appeal.

Wissahickon Rhododendrons have beautiful large trusses of flowers with lighter, spotted centers. They are hardy and can be grown in the north.

Elsie Lee Azalea is a late blooming azalea that has ruffly double light lavender flowers. Although it is evergreen, it does loose many of its leaves in harsh climates, but they grown back in the spring.

Bouganvilleas were named after the famous French explorer, Admiral Louis de Bougainville, who "discovered" them in 1768 when he and his crew became the first Frenchmen to circumnavigate the globe. The salmon pink "blooms" are not true flowers, but instead are papery bracts that encircle the small, white, tubular flower. This Bougainvillea was found at Sarapiqui, Costa Rica.

Pioneer Silvery Pink Rhododendron in front of Hershey's Red Azalea. The word, "rhododendron" comes from two Greek words meaning rose and tree. The over 1000 species range from the size of a tiny bush to the size of a multi story house. They are known for their showy flowers and lovely foliage.

Magnolia time

Spring is a wonderful time at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C. when the magnolia trees are in full bloom. This building, known as the Castle, was the first building of the sixteen building museum complex and was completed in 1855 out of red sandstone fto imitate a 12th Century Norman castle incorporating late Romanesque and early Gothic design ideas.
