Doing laundry in the Ganges in Varasani. Varanasi is considered to be a holy city by Buddhists and Jains, and is viewed as the holiest place in the world by Hindus who believe that it was founded by the Hindu deity, Lord Shiva, around 5,000 years ago. It is believed to be one of the oldest continually inhabited cities in the world. Although the Ganges is extremely polluted, people believe that it will physically and spiritually cleanse them. Laundry and bathing can be seen continally along the Ganges at Varanasi.

This village near Ranthambore, India did not have running water. Women took their laundry to the field pump, filled their basin with water and did a wash using a bar of soap. This woman had her face covered for most of the time while she was washing her clothes, but uncovered it once the men who were not from the village left.

A woman does laundry at a village near Ranthambore, India. There is no running water in the village so the field hand pump is used to obtain water for the wash basin. Because men from outside the village are present, she covered her face with her sari.

Using the pump in the field outside a village near Ranthambore, India, this woman did her family's laundry. Most villagers had little more than one or two changes of clothing, so laundry was a daily event.
