27 Aug 2021 18 16 171
Split rail fences were popular where wood was plentiful and the ground was too hard to dig a fence post. "Old Sturbridge Village is a living museum located in Sturbridge, Massachusetts which recreates life in rural New England during the 1790s through 1830s. It is the largest living museum in New England, covering more than 200 acres (80 hectares). The Village includes 59 antique buildings, three water-powered mills, and a working farm. Third-person costumed interpreters demonstrate and interpret 19th-century arts, crafts, and agricultural work. " en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_Sturbridge_Village AIMG 5495

Coralling the cranberries

17 Oct 2013 7 5 539
Harvesting cranberries, Wareham, MA. To "wet harvest" cranberries, the bogs are flooded with water from nearby ponds. A harvesting machine is then driven through. This machine knocks the cranberries off the plant and they float to the surface. Workers pulling booms corral the cranberries and they are sucked by hose onto a truck to take them to the processing plant. Whole cranberries that are not destined to be immediately processed are picked in dry fields in a labor intensive and weather dependent process. AIMG 0323

Collin Street Bakery Farm (Corsicana) is the largest organic golden pineapple farm in Costa Rica and is Fair Trade Certified. A worker dressed in thick clothing to protect him from the sharp spines of the pineapple foliage walks in the field looking for ripened pineapples. Beyond the pineapple field is the papaya field. The fields are ringed by trees which provide shelter for migrating birds. AxMG_1886
