Mass Glass (Explored)

10 Apr 2016 31 36 469
2016 World Figure Skating Championships - Men's Free Skate - The press, particularly the Asian press, could not get enough of skater Yuzuru Hanyu of Japan. He had not yet set foot on the ice, yet the press photographers were aiming in anticipation, while the crowd amused itself. Submitted for the Sunday Challenge: Photographer. The quality of the shot is less than satisfactory due to the lighting conditions requiring a high ISO and arena rules which did not permit the use of monopods by non-press photographers. Alas, I do not have access to the cameras and lenses that these professionals have. AIMG 2691

Zooming elephant (Explored)

Using a slow shutter speed, I moved the zoom lens while taking this photo. This is a photograph of an embroidered elephant on a ribbed towel. It is slightly tilted to give it more impact. The Sunday Challenge: Symbol. Elephants are the symbols of strength, family, the need for wildlife protection and conservation, and for me, romance. AIMG 1000

Supermoon

25 Jul 2014 14 12 602
"A supermoon is the coincidence of a full moon or a new moon with the closest approach the Moon makes to the Earth on its elliptical orbit, resulting in the largest apparent size of the lunar disk as seen from Earth. The technical name is the perigee-syzygy of the Earth-Moon-Sun system." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Supermoon But really, it is a good excuse to get out the Tamron 150-600 and shoot a (relatively) stationary object. Stay Straight

2013 World Synchronized Skating Championships, Boston, MA - Jingu Ice Messengers Grace - Japanese National Champions I brought my new Sigma 18-250 Macro lens to try out at the competition. It is a slower lens (3.5-6.3) which meant that I had to boost the ISO. I wanted to see how quickly it would focus in low light and I was very pleased with the speed. My old Canon 40D is very grainy at 1250 ISO, but the lens was relatively sharp at all focal lengths. The graininess problem should be resolved by my next camera (hopefully the Canon 70D). There was an unusually large pincushion distortion, most of which could be corrected in Photoshop. Compromises had to be made to achieve such a large focal length, but It is superb for what it does. A spot on review can be found at www.dpreview.com/lensreviews/sigma-18-250mm-3p5-6p3-os-hs... . AIMG_8499
