A winning smile (Explored)

Chinchero, Peru is a village at an altitude of approximately 12,500 feet in which many of the locals still dress in traditional attire. The women, particularly unmarried ones, braid their hair and wear woven clothing and red felt hats. There are a number of weaving cooperatives in the village that allow the women to earn an income. This is not quite as sharp as I would have liked, but it was shot from a boat in marginal light. Spectacled caiman at Cano Negro, Costa Rica. The Spectacled caiman lives in lowland wetland and riverine habitats in fresh and salt water. Males tend to be 6 - 8 feet long while females grow to almost 5 feet. They can be identified by the bony ridge between the eyes, which looks like they are wearing spectacles. AxMG_2367

Despite the saddle, I don't think that camels were really designed to be ridden. Mounting and dismounting involves being jolted at a 45 degree angle and riding a camel moves your spine as if you were using a hula hoop in slow motion. It's fun to do - once - but unless you are crossing the Sahara, take a bus. AIMG_5942A

Smile for the camera

There is something very challenging about getting a person with a machine gun or automatic rifle to smile for the camera. In the US, they tend to be rather cranky about it. In Italy, they were only too happy to do so if requested. In China, it was strickly forbidden, although when the errant tourist did so, most guards at the major tourist sites merely ignored them. In India, some police were sufficiently scarey in the conduct of their duties to avoid even approaching. This man seemed friendly and very professional as he guarded the Taj Mahal and a smile from me while pointing to my camera got a pose and a smile back. AIMG_6105

Ranthambore Fort in India was founded in 944. It passed through many rulers including the Mughal Emperor Akbar, who captured the fortress in 1559. The area surrounding the fortress became a hunting ground for the Maharajas of Jaipur and is now a National Park where wild tigers and sloth bears live. AIMG_5210
