Stand closer. It may be shorter than you think.

Seen at a truck stop in El Salvador. Interestingly, the English translation of the original Spanish is not quite accurate. A better translation would be "Urinate in the center of the toilet." Perhaps the translator had a sense of humor. Or perhaps the translator truly believed that English speaking male truckers on the Pan American Highway had an exaggerated opinion of their anatomy. For Sale: One room, no view

The Sunday Challenge: Change I thought that change in ownership would be a good entry for this challenge. At least, I hope that there will be a change in ownership. This property has been listed for over 3 years. Because land is so expensive, the builder tore down a lovely smaller house and built a hulking boxy monstrosity (not shown) in a neighborhood of charming Victorian and Tudor homes. The house and its weedy lot remain under intermittent construction and are a neighborhood eyesore. As a bit of irony, the broker, William Ravies, advertises itself as a broker of luxury homes. Note the detailing on the outhouse. TSC20211009 114127

The Chokolade Boy

This was a sign painted on the wall of an old building. "Sverresborg is an open air museum with more than 80 historical buildings, several indoor exhibitions, and two restaurants. The museum’s old town is comprised of buildings that were originally located in downtown Trondheim, and offers a charming representation of the wooden houses that have dominated the cityscape from the 18th century up until today. The museum’s rural department is located around the ruins of the castle, and consists of farmsteads and houses surrounded by picturesque nature. The houses are all originally from the Trøndelag region. In the rural department you will also find our Sami collection, the Haltdalen stave church, the Lo church and the old school." www.trondheim.com/trondelag-folk-museum AIMG 6974

How not to use the toilet

Western style toilets were slowly appearing in Thailand and replacing or supplementing squat toilets. Bathroom signs such as these attempted to instruct users not to use western toilets as squat toilets. From the archives for The Sunday Challenge: Bathroom AThailand3 257

Signs of the Cassowary III - Street signs

19 Jul 2013 4 374
I spent two nights in the Daintree Rainforest in Queensland Australia. I had very much wanted to see the elusive forest bird, the southern cassowary. Despite their large size (5-6 feet tall), they are well hidden in the forest. They have a large central claw that has been known to inflict severe damage in an attack and a brightly colored neck. After two days of wandering about, I had seen their popular food sources including the blue quandong berry, their tracks in the mud and even several signs proclaiming their presence, but I had not seen a single cassowary. As evening approached, I went down to the beach at Cape Tribulation. I brought only my point and shoot because I did not want to carry my heavier gear and the lighting was too low for great shots. Wouldn't you know that a cassowary chose that time to come out of the forest and walk on the beach? I raced towards it and photographed it as best I could. The shots are not my best, but they are fine memories of the mysterious cassowary. The photos can be seen at www.ipernity.com/doc/304817/23942373 and www.ipernity.com/doc/304817/23942367 AIMG 7460

You might accidently get killed

14 Jul 2013 3 6 475
The Australian duo, The Scared Weird Little Guys, did a marvelous song about some of the natural but deadly wonders of Australia. The song can be heard at www.youtube.com/watch?v=HmRexWQhs3M . The beaches at Cape Tribulation, Daintree Rainforest, Queensland, Australia were quite empty . . . . of humans. AIMG 7403

Palace Gates

Achilleion Palace in Corfu, Greece, was built in 1890 by Austrian Empress, Elizabeth of Bavaria. After her assasination, German Kaiser Wilhelm II purchased Achilleion Palace and used it as his summer residence. It was used as a military hospital for French and Serbian troops during World War I and as military headquarter for axis powers during World War II. It is now managed by the Hellenic Tourist Organisation and is open to the public. AIMG_4004

Hooker entrance

24 Jun 2012 206
Sign outside the Massachusetts State House. I've always found this sign to be amusing. Not many state houses have special entrances for hookers (slang for prostitutes). It actually refers to the statute of General Joseph Hooker, a Union army officer during the Civil War, which is nearby. AIMG_1487
