Meet Marty (Explored)

17 Jul 2021 11 17 129
Marty is a robot that roams about the Stop and Shop grocery store with a sign that says, "“Marty is an autonomous robot that uses image capturing technology to report spills, debris, and other potential hazards to store employees to improve your shopping experience.” I find that his beeping and whirring is very off-putting. Even though he stops if he encounters an object or person, I do not like him approaching me. The Saturday Self-Challenge: Grocery Store. Oops! I just say that the photo was to be in square format. Oh well. . . . I'll try to pay more attention next week. A20210711 111104

The Sunday Challenge: Words I shot this on a white sheet of poster paper that picked up the reflection of color from the book to give it a bit of an orange glow at the bottom. I made a frame using a black background and the erase tool in various brush widths to make the stars. For a history of Robby the Robot, check out en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robby_the_Robot . TSCIMG 3678

These windup up toys are over 30 years old. They could probably use some WD-40 as they make a gallant effort to walk. TSCIMG 4137

From hand to mind

15 May 2016 9 11 345
"n the late 1960s and early 1970s, Professor Marvin Minsky created a robotic arm that used a video camera and computer to build with children’s blocks. This work was the principal inspiration and source of ideas for his landmark book on the workings of the human mind, The Society of Mind (1986). While it might seem counterintuitive to build a machine without a conceptual framework, the method proved surprisingly effective and gave rise to Minsky’s theory that the mind is composed of a multitude of little processes called “agents.” As Minsky put it: 'Each mental agent by itself can only do some simple thing that needs no mind or thought at all. Yet when we join these agents in societies—in certain very special ways—this leads to true intelligence.'" museum.mit.edu/150/9 AIMG 3483

The Sunday Challenge: Forced Perspectives. The real Robby the Robot was a 7 foot tall creation that made his first appearance in the 1956 film, Forbidden Planet. He later appeared in a number of television series including, Lost in Space and The Addams Family. For more information about Robby, check out en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robby_the_Robot . This model is less than a foot tall. I posed him near a very large house and used a narrow aperture to get the best depth of field. I also used flash to avoid having the much lighter background overwhelm the subject. AIMG 4117
