(+ PiP's) La construction de la cathédrale Notre Dame de l'Assomption ou cathédrale Santa Maria Assunta d’Ajaccio, située dans la ville nouvelle génoise, fut terminée en 1593. En 1559, le Conseil de la ville d'Ajaccio intervient auprès de la République de Gênes et du pape Grégoire XIII pour permettre la construction de cette nouvelle cathédrale. Une inscription indique que la cathédrale a été terminée en 1593 par l'évêque Giulio Giustiniani. Napoléon Ier y est baptisé le 21 juin 1771. Elle est classée au titre des monuments historiques en 1906. Napoléon III a commandé à l'architecte Louis-Jules André (1819-1890), un Avant-projet de restauration et d'agrandissement de la cathédrale en 1863. Il prévoyait de changer l'orientation de la cathédrale en tournant sa façade vers l'est pour faire face à la Maison Bonaparte. Les maisons entre la cathédrale et la Maison Bonaparte devaient être détruites. Un peu plus tard, un projet prévoyait de changer l'implantation de la cathédrale.
