Near Southeast DC Redevelopment 'Out With the Old & In With the New' Architectual & Industrial Photography Exhibit by Elvert Barnes 16 - 31 October 2006 Sizzling Express 4th and M Streets, SE, Washington DC http://elvertbarnes-freedom.blogspot.com/2006/10/near-southeast-dc-redevelopment-old-new.html Photo Details: This picture was taken 29 November 2004 at the corner of Second and L Streets in SE WDC. Two blocks north of M Street it is near the Navy Yard. When revisiting this area in May 2005 I was surprised to see that though the beginnings of a new building surrounded all three sides of the Star Market, it ... the red building ... remained just as it had some months before with the exception that it had been 'pointed up'. Which means, that the cracks between the bricks had been repaired with cement and/or silicon. When I inquired of several workmen if the red building was 'historic' and/or if it would be demolished they were not able to respond with a definitive answer. In March 2006 the owner would post the red brick building for sale on Craiglist. It was then that I learned why the building had remianed. The owner had refused to sell. It is now October 2006, almost two years after this photo was taken and while the signs have been removed the red brick building still stands with a fresh new coat of paint.
