Gunpowder magazine, Padley Gorge, Derbyshire.

08 Jun 2008 144
This is a former gunpowder magazine, used by the local gritstone quarrying industry, in Padley Gorge, near Grindleford, in the Peak District, Derbyshire. The roof was deliberately constructed in arched brickwork, so that in the event of an accidental explosion, the roof would blow off upwards, leaving the strong gritstone walls relatively unscathed, and therefore easier to repair the damage. The interior can be seen here..... www.ipernity.com/doc/earthwatcher/39022916
