Newgale Sands 3

Nolton Haven to Newgale The small Nolton-Newgale coalfield is separated by faulting from the main Pembrokeshire coalfield. It lies mostly within Pennant Sandstone Formation of the Upper Coal Measures rocks. Heading north along the coast path from Rickets Head, the open expanse of Newgale Sands dominates view. Seaward dipping beds of the Pennant Sandstone Formation form the wave-cut platform in the foreground and the cliffs on the right. The cliffs in the distant, north, side of the bay are comprised of Cambrian sediments and Pre-Cambrian volcanics.

It lies mostly within Pennant Sandstone Formation of the Upper Coal Measures rocks. Heading north along the coast path from Rickets Head, the open expanse of Newgale Sands and the wide sweep of St Brides Bay dominates view. Ramsey Island is visible on the skyline on the extreme left; the summit of Carn Llidi just left of centre. The wave-cut platform just in front of Kate's Cottage exposes the Druim an Fhurain Sandstone (Jurassic) cut by a steeply dipping dolerite dyke (Tertiary). The Cuillins on Skye form the backdrop across the Narrows of Raaasy.

Outer Head and Middle Head - Worm's Head peninsula

The Worm's Head peninsula lies at the western extremity of the Gower Peninsula, south Wales. It is connected to the main part of the Gower at Rhosili by a rocky causeway which is normally only uncovered two-and-a-half hours either side of low tide. There are four distinct 'lumps' to Worm's Head - the long Inner Head, nearest Rhosili; the spectacular Outer Head, the most distant seen here, and the lower Middle Head consisting of two separate summits, with the arch of Devil's Bridge between them. This view is from the top of Inner Head.

Low Tide Joints

The tide was nearly at its lowest and extensive rock ledges were exposed at the western end of Pinhay Bay, Devon, just west of Lyme Regis. I was fascinated by the pattern of joints in the rock ledges (White Lias (Rhaetic), I think).

Slack Water

Pinhay Bay, Devon, just west of Lyme Regis. Walking along the beach I was suddenly aware that it had gone very quiet - it was calm and windless and there was not a sound coming from the sea. The tide was at its lowest and there was scarcely a ripple on the water. About ten minutes later the tide had turned and once again small waves were breaking on the beach with their familiar sound returning once more.

Worms Head viewed from the causeway. The Carboniferous Limestone is steeply dipping to the south here and in the distance on Inner Head. There is a raised beach visible above the modern beach on Inner Head.
