Anti-crepuscular rays over Churchton Bay

25 May 2016 195
Early morning brought a nice display of laminated wave clouds over The Braes on Skye, and a rare glimpse of anti-crepuscular rays seeming to radiate outwards from the anti-solar point behind the ferry MV Hallaig at her moorings. Explanation here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anticrepuscular_rays

Dùn Caan summit view to Ben Tianavaig

25 May 2016 164
A walk to Dùn Caan 17 A view west from the edge of the Dùn Caan summit plateau looking over the Sound of Raasay to Skye. Ben Tianavaig is prominent in the centre. To the right, Portree is just visible. On the skyline left of the centre are the two flat-topped hills Healabhal Mhòr and Healabhal Bheag - 'Macleod's Tables' - on western Skye. The body of water in the foreground is Loch an Meilich.

Dùn Caan summit: southern panorama

A walk to Dùn Caan 13 The summit of Dùn Caan is very fine indeed with spectacular views in all directions. There are many contrasting colours in the rocks, vegetation and peaty soil. This photo is a panorama from two separate photos stitched together. The view is to the south, with the mountains of Skye in the distance; also the island of Scalpay in centre. The main body of water is the Inner Sound with the Crowlin Islands, Longay and Pabay visible (see notes). To the east of the summit, the ground falls away steeply in a series of crags and escarpments. The green flat area left of centre marks the abandoned settlement of Hallaig, a victim of the brutal Highland clearances. I had the summit to myself and spent over an hour here just taking in the scenery.

Bealach Ruadh and the nameless lochan

A walk to Dùn Caan 10 Looking SW from the edge of the summit plateau of Dùn Caan to the spectacular scarp of Bealach Ruadh and the nameless lochan perched (it seems) almost on the edge of the precipice. In the background are the Red Cuillins on Skye and Loch Sligachan.

Reflecting on Loch na Meilich

A walk to Dùn Caan 8 I liked how the scree slope fans of Bealach Ruadh were reflected in Loch na Meilich. They look like dinosaurs or dragons:

Bealach Ruadh and Loch na Meilich

25 May 2016 248
A walk to Dùn Caan 6 After leaving the nameless lochan, the path descends steeply over the edge of the fault-line scarp of Bealach Ruadh. A short stony gully (see note) quickly leads to a well-graded path which descends obliquely to the shore of Loch na Meilich at NG 5756 3943.

Here be dragons at Loch na Meilich

25 May 2016 281
A walk to Dùn Caan 7 Next to the path at Loch na Meilich is this warning sign. However, the dragons must have been away, as I didn't see any, even though I looked for them. A pity. Added 2021: The dragons are actually formed by the patterns of the scree slopes which run down into the loch!

A walk to Dùn Caan 3 Near Càrn Sgrabach the path levels off and the summit of Dùn Caan comes into view, well seen across a little jewel of a lochan (nameless) at NG 575 393. A great spot for a short rest. There is little hint of the steep descent shortly to come as the path plunges over the edge of Bealach Ruadh!
