From the Rifugio Bolzano, a well-defined path leads to the Schlern summit of Petz (2663 m)

The splendid Rifugio Bolzano or Schlernhäuser (altutude 2450 m) is situated at the western end of the Schlern high plateau, just before the final ascent to the Petz summit of Schlern. We can vouch that the coffee and Apfelstrudel are superb.

The flattish (!) area on the right of the photo is the Schlern Hochfläche, a broad, undulating, high-level plateau generally 2300 - 2400 m in altitude and narrowing to the east towards the Roßzähne ridge in the centre distance. Its north-east flank is steep and high above the Seiser Alm meadows. The footpath off decends into the mist-filled valley in the centre of the photo. To the left of centre, the distant slab of Plattkofel is momentarily lit by sunshine. The view is towards the east.

Descending the north-east facing flank of the Schlern high plateau, bound for Compatsch. The path is very clear and well-maintained, so there is no difficulty in route-finding, even in mist.

The Friedensweg (path of peace) is a delightful zig-zag route mainly through woodland from Kastelruth northwards towards Tisens. This view is looking back towards Schlern from one of the zigs (or is it a zag?).

The tiny village of Tisens is hidden away in a green gem of a valley, just to the north of Kastelruth (the visible houses). The northern end of Schlern towers over all.

The northern extremity of the Schlern plateau breaks away in two spectacular towers: Euringer (2394 m) and Santner (2413 m) just to the right. Viewed from the Proßliner Hütte.

Altitude 1950 m (well above the clouds to the east) yet such a richness of wild flowers.

The building in the foreground is the Proßliner Hütte, a fine refreshments hut conveniently situated for the ascent of Schlern.
