Icy Waterfall near Blacka Hill, Totley

09 Feb 2007 122
One of Sheffield's best-kept secrets, this waterfall is on the stream which rises on Totley Moor and flows between Blacka Hill and Bolehill. The approx. NGR is SK 289 800.The stream is one of several which rise in that area and coalesce to form the Old Hay Brook. The waterfall is caused by the stream flowing over a shelf of strong sandstone: the Redmires Flags. It's quite well hidden in a small gorge and is not visible from the surrounding hillsides apart from a small area on Bolehill. It's also quite adventurous to get to, involving much pushing and shoving through undergrowth and plodging about in wet boggy areas next to the stream. The best time is in the winter when vegetation is low and the ground is frozen, as in the picture. It's a lovely little spot and well worth the struggle and the risk of wet feet. See where this picture was taken. [?]
