Wall on wall

13 Mar 2021 4 296
A fine double stone wall along the eastern end of the Limb Valley footpath to Ringinglow. Just beyond the upper wall is the old Rough Rock (Namurian age) sandstone quarry, now landscaped and forming part of Whinfell Quarry Gardens. The lower wall is newer and was probably built as a retaining structure when the footpath was formalised into a recognised recreational route.

Lichen on wall

A wall next to a cottage in Ran Wood in Ryecroft Glen at the western end of Ecclesall Woods, Sheffield. I liked the glowing colour of the Common orange lichen Xanthoria parietina in the spring sunshine. Detail here:

Fenney Lane hollow way 1

21 Jul 2020 2 2 161
Fenney Lane is a very old trackway or hollow way, possibly a former packhorse route. This part of the route runs from Whirlow Hall Farm towards the Limb Valley. Part of its length has this beautiful stone wall, perhaps dating from the 18th or 19th century, constructed from the local Rough Rock sandstone (Upper Carboniferous, Namurian 'Millstone Grit', age) which was extensively quarried nearby for walling and building stone. I loved the subdued greens and browns on this gentle Autumn morning.

Raasay: Brae ruins 1

Raasay - A walk along the Allt a' Bhràghad to Inver Bay Near the start of the walk is the ruined settlement of Brae. Abandoned possibly as a result of the Clearances (but not sure about this). The Sound of Raasay and the hills of Skye are in the background.

A walk to the abandoned settlement of Hallaig on the island of Raasay The path to Hallaig passes by an old stone-walled enclosure, with great views ESE over Inner Sound to the Crowlin Islands, Longay and the Scottish mainland beyond.

Stone fence

This 'fence' is made from rough-hewn slabs of Ashover Grit (Namurian), and divides the fields from the ancient stone-slabbed track, just SW of Ashover, Derbyshire.

Sun on Sir William

25 Mar 2008 187
Late afternoon sunshine lights up the fields separated by the drystone walls on the eastern slopes of Sir William Hill near Grindleford, Derbyshire. I really liked the lighting and geometry of these Enclosure Acts walls and fields, and the textures of the bare trees. Viewed from Hay Wood quarries above Nether Padley.

Vine twigs on wall

I liked the pattern and texture these twigs made, growing up an old wall in my garden.

Green wall 1

The overcast lighting really brought out the colour of the algae-covered dry-stone wall on Fenny Lane, Whirlow Hall Farm, Sheffield.

Green wall 2

The overcast lighting really brought out the colour of the algae-covered dry-stone wall on Fenny Lane, Whirlow Hall Farm, Sheffield. This particular section of wall is beautifully constructed from the locally quarried flaggy sandstone of the Rough Rock (Namurian).
