A day on the Langdale Pikes - Photo 19
The path down from Stickle Tarn closely follows Mill Gill (usually named as Stickle Ghyll, these days) down to the fell foot and the valley floor of Great Langdale.
Mill Gill tumbles over many cascades and falls on its descent. This is probably the loveliest and it is right next to the footpath, but how many people, their heads down, bound for the high fells or else the pub at the bottom, actually step aside a few yards to see this beautiful view? But we did, of course, and our lives have been enriched as a result.
This is the final photo of the set. What a lovely day it has been!
Mossy Hallucigenia?

The popular main footpath through the upper reaches of the steep-sided Limb Valley runs halfway up the northern flank of the the valley side. To follow the Limb Brook itself in the valley bottom can entail a somewhat muddy adventure, often through a tangle of undergrowth, fallen trees and branches. Not many people choose this way, so one can be quite alone and mostly hidden from everyone else.
I was particularly captivated by this moss-covered pine trunk and its fanciful resemblence to the weird-looking Burgess Shale fossil Hallucigenia !

The Limb Brook has its source near Ringinglow high up on the west side of Sheffield and flows through Whirlow Brook Park and Ecclesall Woods to meet the River Sheaf at Abbeydale. I was just experimenting with greens and rich browns and the flowing water.
