@pomphorhynchus - I'll see your nuthatch and raise you a bloody great heron! Apparently male and female herons look the same. They are about 90cm tall, and (according to my book) there are only about 4000 breeding pairs in the UK.

As soon as I opened the back door it took off. It probably lives in Crystal Palace Park - where the nearest decent-sized lakes are.
