Noble False Widow Spider

Steatoda nobilis , probably the smaller male. I saw this unusual-looking spider in the corner of a window indoors. I scooped him up and dropped him out on the back step. At no point did he sink his fangs into me, or start World War 3. About 3cm long, finger to toe.

Spider vs Bee

Crab spiders hide in flowers and pounce on their prey. I missed the coup de grace - the bee was already dead when I found them. The spider can just about lift the bee with her jaws. Also showing my (gardener's) thumb for scale.

Catch 3

15 Sep 2006 96
Photo from outdoors with dark room behind. The spider is waiting for her web to twang.

Catch 1

15 Sep 2006 119
Cranefly on the outside of the window, dangerously near a spider's web. (Taken from indoors) I think it's a mummy-long-legs because of the pointy ovipositor at her aft end.

Catch 5

15 Sep 2006 104
The unfortunate cranefly is now a ready meal. The spider has returned to the centre of the web for a few minutes. Meat should be properly hung, don't you think?

Catch 2

15 Sep 2006 107
Garden Spider having a little appetizer before the main meal. (Taken from indoors)

Catch 7

15 Sep 2006 120
Mmm! Half an hour after I took this photo the web was empty again and there was a bit of dry husk on the windowsill.

Another garden spider

15 Sep 2006 108
Another Garden Spider enjoying a nutritious lunch. Notice the four holes in the top of her abdomen - I think they are spiricles that she breathes through.

Catch 4

15 Sep 2006 103
I wasn't quick enough to photograph the pounce - this is about 2 seconds after and the cranefly is well and truly trussed.

Catch 6

15 Sep 2006 125
I'm back indoors looking through the window as the spider tucks into her delicious cranefly.
