Straw was brought in to make some of the mud a little less slippery, so there are probably by now adobe paths at Sunday Creek Motocross Track.

Athens Sheriff deputies weren't covered in mud -- yet.

Katelyn explains that while she was leading the race someone motioned her to a route that ended up being wrong, shortening the track and incurring for her a penalty she couldn't overcome, so she retired from the race, not a happy rider. UPDATE (via email from Katelyn): "I did end up winning that race. A track worker pointed me a line with many other riders and they ended up adjusting the time because of their error."

. . . and turned out to be Katelyn Osburn of Greene, N.Y., who wants to be champion in the women's professional class.

The expressions of the riders are always interesting.

Four-wheeler racing isn't for the faint of heart.

The yellow tape probably isn't strong enough to prevent rider and machine from plunging into the ravine, so it's good that it's very bright.

The surroundings at Sunday Creek Motocross Track are picturesque and welcoming.

Some riders had tear-off goggles, letting them get rid of the front layer as soon as it's so mud-covered that vision is impossible.

As with European rallyes, spectators get very close to the action.
