When a cicada looks you in the eye . . .

. . . the weak-hearted might run in terror. The cicada, he don't care. Or she. We just don't know, do we.

About to molt

Here's a cicada that has just crawled out of the ground and up this tree. In a bit, it will break out of its shell, dry its wings, and fly off. Then it will settle in or on a tree, suck some of its sap, make lots of noise (if it is a male), have sex, lay eggs (if it is a female), and die. The eggs will hatch and the larvae will fall to the ground, dig in, suck the sap from roots for a couple of years, dig back out, climb a tree, molt, fly away . . .

Didn't quite make it

This poor slug thought he could get across the sidewalk before the sun got to him. He was, alas, wrong.

Public workers. Idiots. But I repeat myself.

On the other side of the closed bridge is a road that runs parallel to the closed road. It was decided that work needed to be done on the now-closed road, so they closed it. But they didn't fix the bridge. So everybody had to turn around and drive many miles out of their way. In a simpler times, the result would have involved beatings of those responsible. Oh, for simpler times!

After an autumn rain

These textures and light were appealing to me.

With a little manipulation

The bishop's homily

The Most Reverend Jeffrey Marc Monforton visits Christ the King in Athens, Ohio. The largely student congregation was delighted to discover a really cool bishop.

. . . you gotta suffer to sing the blues.

A sad metaphor

Tree mostly bare. Doors that can be neither entered nor safely exited. Abandoned remains of a once-proud structure. Reminds me of the America we've decided to build for ourselves.

Common in nature

Cold but bright morning, sun on the other side of the trees. What drew me to this stark image is how common it is in all kinds of natural phenomena: satellite pictures of river systems are of this pattern. Our own circulatory system has many of the same aspects, as do mountain ranges, the support structures in leaves, and so on. I think it's cool. Also pretty.

All is calm . . .

Cats by flashlight

Mary Dewey's two real cats, asleep while everyone has Christmas dinner. This was lit solely by a tiny led flashlight barely an inch long.
