Here's the problem: What had been an oxbow in the river was cut off during winter flooding, making an island at right and crucially rerouting high-velocity water straight at the bike path, causing it to be badly eroded.

Looking northwest toward the bike path bridge over the Hocking River, one can see the large rocks and plastic water barrier that are being placed where the river eroded the bank. The machinery is on the bed of the path itself.
