Yesterday a very big red-tailed hawk landed in my back yard. Grabbing the closest camera at hand, I stuck the 200mm Micro-Nikkor on it and made a couple of pictures, which were awful in no small measure because the image was small. (The fact that I was shooting through the glass kitchen door didn't help, either.) Sad yo say, I've only rarely gotten a decent picture with my old 500mm mirror lens. So, after some thought, I wondered how the 200mm macro lens would work with a 2x teleconverter. I made a few test pictures and it seemed to work okay, albeit as a 400mm f8, which makes focusing problematic and doesn't have much room for stopping down in most lighting conditions. Oh, well. So this morning I took that rig for a little walk, to see what happened if it is used for macro. The result was not spectacular, but in the right circumstances it might be acceptable, as in this picture of a wasp, taken from about three feet away. This is the uncropped image.
