Another unusual Queen Anne's lace

29 Jul 2014 2 2 284
Queen Anne's lace typically has a central flower that is dark, dark, almost eggplant purple. But this one has a much lighter one, which makes it easier to see the structure of that tiny center blossom. (This is not the same specimen as the one whose other flowers are purple-edged, which is also an anomaly and a pretty one -- but its central flower is nearly black!)

A newer fly

Okay, I'm practicing bug stalking with the 60mm Micro-Nikkor, which goes to 1:1, but you have to be really close to get there. It can be done. But I'm going to have to drink much less coffee.

When flies grow old

This one seems to have some mileage on it. Maybe frequent-fly miles?

Another nervous wasp

This is another of those busy, always moving, thread-waisted wasps.

All eyes

Tiny cowrie beetle

I gave it this common name, because it so resembles the common cowrie shell. It is less than an eighth-inch long, but I thought it very pretty.

Egg watch, day 16: that's that!

This morning they were all empty, at least of the bugs that were supposed to hatch from them. But now I'm wondering if the little reddish-brown lumps are perhaps themselves some sort of parasitic things, perhaps mature organisms or possibly the larvae of something else. Anyway, it seems the eggs were of a marmorated stink bug, so I'm glad it turned out this way. I'll keep an eye on them for new developments.
