But no, it's a well-camouflaged hopper. For awhile I thought it was a pupa, but then it stretched its hind legs. Weird little thing. Photographed it at greater than 1:1 with the enlarging lens on a focusing tube.

Not very sharp, but the best picture so far of the little wasp. This picture was made by putting a 50mm f2.8 EL-Nikkor enlarging lens on a focusing extension tube. My conclusion? Don't do this hand held! (Also, ignore the lens part of the EXIF information -- I forgot to change it in the camera when I attached my home-brew contraption.) Bear in mind that the entire clutch of eggs is less than a quarter-inch per side, so we're talking a wasp between 1/16- and 1/32-inch in length.
