Millipedes

Know the difference between centipedes and millipedes? The quickest way to make the distinction is that millipedes have two pairs of legs coming from each segment of their bodies, while centipedes have only one leg on each side per segment. These guys are generally beneficial, even if they're not especially handsome.

Some kind of fly, I think

No idea what this is. Am puzzled by the light-colored sacs in its armpits (wingpits?). The flower itself was only about 3/4 inch across. (I should note that the EXIF data say it was taken with a 135mm lens. It wasn't. It was taken with a 105mm AI-s Micro-Nikkor with a TC-14a teleconverter, for 147mm or thereabouts.) Update: Roy Lowry, the great macro photographer who also exhibits pictures on Ipernity, let me know that the sacs are used to stabilize the fly as it flies. A little research revealed that they are called "halteres."

It is a gray day, and I thought I'd take a few minutes to calm my nerves (well, okay, relax some while putting strain on others) by seeing how well the 105nn f2.8 AI-s Micro-Nikkor worked with the TC-14A 1.4-power teleconverter on the D7100. Available light, camera set to manual and auto-ISO.
