It forever amazes me at how little light modern cameras need. This is shot hand-held on a foggy night at Port Columbus Airport -- that light in the sky at the end of the runway is a 737 on final approach. It was dark enough outside that I didn't see the details in the clouds until I looked at the picture.

It was as hot and still and the air as heavy as it looks. Summer in a midwestern city. I half expected a fish to swim by . . .

The TSA gave me grief when I made this picture of this very public place. The picture has since been published. I'm pretty sure there is no danger. Jeez.

Not many people (or airplanes) around.

Cold, not much traffic, somehow possessed of a melancholy beauty, though. It's what the world looks like when a visit is over and a friend's plane has taken off. JPEG straight out of camera, no processing at all. As usual.

Nice -- well, hot -- spring evening. The distortion (and the slight banding, dammit) are a result of the method (and in the case of the banding, the camera) used to make the picture. The runway is actually straight!

In GTMO, you almost get the sense that this is a small town in, say, Florida, but there's always something to remind the visitor that it isn't.

To avoid Cuban airspace, the plane has to make a steep bank and sharp turn immediately before landing. There have been cases where big airplanes have scraped a wing tip on approach.

New arrivals are carefully searched lest they be bringing in contraband.

Across the bay is the Windward Point, where housing is located as well as most of the base activity.
